The runways may host runway stars like Karlie Kloss and Chanel Iman, but often it’s the creative geniuses behind the scenes who are most sought after. Within the whose-who in the make up industry, Pat McGrath is the name to known. If you follow fashion at all, or have ever opened a magazine, you have most likely bared witness to the creative influence McGrath has had on the face of beauty.

Originally from England, and with no formal cosmetics training, McGrath has worked her way up to having a hand in just about every facet of the industry. On the business end of things, she is the Global Cosmetics Creative Design Director for Procter and Gamble, working with the development and creative direction of many of the company’s make-up powerhouses such as Covergirl. She works with designers and photographers constantly, including the legendary photographer Steven Meisel, to creative runway looks and ad campaigns. Yet, McGrath also still finds time to cater to a laundry list of celebrity clients.

Most recently, I have fallen in love with Pat’s look from the Gucci Fall 2012 show (shown below). Here, she contrasted subtle, beautiful skin with vampy lips to create an utterly romantic aesthetic.

Many praise McGrath for her unique creative range. This is the real beauty of her work; McGrath knows how to induce a subtle, delicate type of beauty in some cases, but is not afraid to be shockingly avant-garde in others. From the elaborately bedazzled, to the crazy and colored, check out below for some of her most innovative runway creations from throughout the years!
